Autumn Postcard 2006 - Formal Designs with NZ Natives & Topiaries

The changing seasons demand good garden structure, and Autumn is the best time to plan & plant! Plants pictured: all natives, with movement, colour, texture & form. Who said natives were boring!!! Details from left to right:-
1. Pittosporum tenuifolium “Golf Ball”
“Golf Ball” is a compact, versatile, miniature pittosporum, with fresh vibrant green foliage, suitable for growing into low hedges and balls. I am currently using Golf Ball in a plant mural on a wall in Kelburn; and in a two-toned block parterre at the entrance to a new house designd by Parsonson Architects in Thorndon. Its attractive foliage also looks stunning in black pots.
2. Classic statuary at our nursery in Ohau, Levin
3. Wind Grass Anamanthele lessonia
This native grass has beautiful russet colours and an arching form, and looks absolutely fabulous contrasted against a razor clipped dark green hedge or freshly mown lawn. I am currently using Wind Grass in an entrance garden to an character villa in Newtown. The central feature is a border of Wind Grass and pavers around a long parterre comprising 3 squares of Box Honesuckle Instant Hedge, with a large XL Box Honesuckle Globe and fiery Nandina domestica pygmaea inside of each square.
4. NZ broadleaf native Griselinia littoralis
This is a lush glossy leafed evergreen native, most often used as a large hedge as it grows well in difficult conditions and looks good all year round. With such good qualities, we have developed it into an espaliered form, suitable for covering north facing and windy walls. It is also useful for planting along driveway and boundary fences, providing “green” relief against hard surfaces, in a stylised large rectangle pattern.
5. Coloured native balls Hebe diosmafolia (dark green), Corposma "Fire Burst" (cherry red), Corposma “Rainbow Surprise” (soft guava red) and Pittosporum tenuifolium “Golf Ball”(fresh green)
We have just released a selection of coloured balls in native plants, just in time for winter. In shades of red and green, these colours will brighten up your garden, especially over long grey winter months when other (flowering) plants are dormant.
