Autumn Postcard 2008 - Great Plants for Pots: Topiary, Succulents & Palms

HEDGE Garden Design & Nursery - Topiary, Succulents, Nikau Palm, Pots

This autumn we have lots of green foliage with interest provided by the different shapes of plants and linear patterns in the leaves and flowers. All of these plants are also suitable to grow in pots. Pictured from left to right:-

1. Box Ball Topiary Buxus sempervirens
Box is one of the best plants to topiary - it's easy to look after, performs well over a long period of time in pots, and can be (patiently!) trained into any shape. Yes, Box is slow growing, but you can help it along with lots of feeding and watering on the soil (not foliage). We have a huge selection in all sizes from small "hedgeling" cuttings to fully formed topiaries. See more Box Topiary ...

2. Alstroemeria "White Buttons"
This is my favourite dwarf variety, with masses and masses of pretty flowers in low spreading clumps. I have recently planted them in circles at the base of flowering Cherries, edged with a fringe of Black Mondo Grass. The fresh green, white, pink and black colours are a wonderful combination.

3. Spiral Aloe Aloe polyphylla
Succulents are another ideal pot plant, withstanding and preferring dry conditions. They look fantastic mixed with other succulents and plants with greeny blue foliage; plants with pink - crimson flowers like Pansies and Violas; and in garden areas with a stone or pebble mulch. The Spiral Aloe is suitable to grow in Wellington - it is able to withstand frost, and requires dry and sunny conditions.

4. Pink Mophead Hydrangea Hydrangea macrophylla
Another marvelous plant for pots - and there are many dwarf varieties to choose from in shades of pink, white and blue. This one works particularly well picking up the leaf detail in the pot. Swap your Hydrangea pots out over winter for Vibernums, Azaleas or Daphnes.

5. Nikau Palm Rhopalostylis sapida
A great Wellington palm - slow growing and suitable for pots or planting in the ground - but in situations that are similar to their growing conditions under the canopy of the forrest where they are protected from frost, all day sun and strong wind.
